The Coward
Christopher Powell
The coward sits on the ground and stares while hating
himself.
Then, he hates himself again and again.
After a period that seems to stretch and stretch
As he waits and ponders and imagines outcomes,
He slowly stands and takes the labored steps
Slowly
Fearfully
Toward the war which he cannot avoid.
At some point, he hopes to be found with the others,
Even if lacking in skill.
His heartbeats echo
Slowly
Fearfully
As he attempts to fight
And stand
In the war.
And then,
Though he is scared,
He is not a coward anymore.
